Both restaurant operators and staff love the idea of a more efficient kitchen. Every detail matters, so improving the kitchen’s efficiency will improve productivity in your restaurant.

You can improve the organisation and structure of your commercial kitchen by updating its layouts and working stations. Here are four ways to make your restaurant kitchen run more smoothly.

Listen to Your Employees’ Feedback

We all tend to get stuck in our ways and believe our way is the best. Any business’ success stems from its employees. According to a study done at Oxford University “an extensive study into happiness and productivity has found that workers are 13% more productive when happy.”  Leaders have to listen to their staff, see the process through their eyes, and make the necessary changes to ensure the full kitchen and staff optimisation.

To get an accurate picture of how the kitchen works, observe a full service and talk to every staff member to find ways to improve their efficiency. Micro managing staff members can lead to chaos in the kitchen. Instead, encourage your staff to be independent, and they will feel more motivated and invested in the successful completion of their job.

Streamline Your Menu

Although you want to wow your guests with unique, creative dishes, it is possible that you don’t always have the equipment or skilled staff necessary to achieve this. You can simplify your menu according to what you have in the kitchen and what your staff is skilled at. Your kitchen should be able to handle everything on your menu without placing too much strain on your staff. Make sure you only choose recipes that are within your budget and skillset. Then, focus on making them the best. Delicious food is about more than just the presentation.

Employee Manual

It is essential to have established standard operating procedures followed by all employees. This helps ensure consistency in the kitchen’s quality. Your staff should review the procedures and perform spot checks. You should not be afraid to change the standard operating procedure if there are new laws or regulations.

Invest in your staff and upskill your Staff

Hardworking, highly skilled staff is the key ingredient to a successful kitchen. You must spend time and money training and hiring the best kitchen staff possible. Loyalty will be rewarded if you are willing to work hard and care about your job.

You won’t see any immediate results, but you can make small improvements each day to improve your kitchen and increase the happiness of your customers and employees. A good leader is open to learning and willing to work with your staff.

Encourage your staff members to acquire new skills. You can improve the performance of your kitchen staff by teaching them about food safety, and expand their knowledge of food preparation and cooking. They will be able to work confidently and competently to run a safe, functional restaurant.  E2 Learn’s HOSPITALITY and CATERING course is for restaurant/hotel owners or individuals who want to improve their staff skills.
